Why We Started Flower N Song : Part One
I want to share the story of why and when we decided to start Flower N Song.
There were two phases to the beginning of the company. The first started right around the onset of the COVID-19 lockdowns.
At the time, I was living in New York City, and things got really rough there, really quickly. I moved to Houston with my children because Texas was much more open. It didn’t feel as oppressive as New York.
My brother had a decent-sized house he was going to rent out, and he allowed my children and me to stay there. So we settled in and prepared for whatever ride was to come with this whole COVID situation. Like everyone else, I didn’t know what to expect, but I was happy to have my kids with me and a nice place to hunker down while we waited for the whole thing to blow over.
The health scare surrounding this unknown virus got me thinking about my family’s well-being and what we could do to stay safe and healthy. I knew that whatever methods we used, they had to be natural.
I’m not against vaccines per se, but something about the rushed effort to vaccinate everyone didn’t sit right with me. The doctors on television urging everyone to get the shot didn’t give me a sense of trust either. It was just a gut feeling—something inside me that I felt I had to trust.
That was when I received a call from my friends in Mexico.
Many of my friends in Mexico are artisans. Some work with jewelry, some create ceremonial crafts, and others make natural-care products. They told me that because of the lockdowns, they couldn’t sell their products at the markets. The markets had all been shut down, while Walmart remained open.

They asked if I could help them sell their products up here in the States. They knew I had a lot of connections and traveled quite a bit, even though my travels had come to a near standstill during that time.
I told them I would do whatever I could to help them sell their products, and I did. But what interested me the most were the health products—especially one in particular: chilcuague, the oral-care product that we sell today.
Discovering Chilcuague

I became fascinated with chilcuague because I knew it came from the Indigenous peoples of Mexico. It was one of their go-to plants for maintaining a healthy mouth and strong teeth.
Native peoples understood the importance of nature. They had a close relationship with the earth and its plants. They didn’t rely on chemicals to care for themselves. They knew how to work with the plants around them, how to take care of their bodies, and how to support their health before problems happened.
The mouth was no exception.
I remember going to museums as a kid and visiting the Native American sections. They would have the bones and craniums of ancient people on display. One thing that always stood out to me was their teeth. They didn’t seem to have bad or rotten teeth. The skulls had full sets of teeth, and I used to wonder: If these people were so old and “primitive,” why were their teeth so nice?
Obviously, I know now that they weren’t primitive at all. But when I was a kid, I believed what the teachers told me. I’ve had to unlearn a lot of that stuff.
The more I studied chilcuague, the more I realized what a powerful and wonderful plant it is. It has many traditional uses for the tongue, gums, and teeth. When swallowed, it is also believed to support healthy gut bacteria.
That is where the name “Root of Gold” comes from. From your mouth to your stomach, this root has been valued for generations. A Win-Win Situation
My plan with chilcuague was a winning situation.
Because of COVID, I could help my brothers and sisters in Mexico sell their products. They could earn a living during the lockdowns, and I could introduce people to this incredible plant and its traditional uses during a very uncertain time.
Win-win.
I was being of service, and it felt good.
The world had entered a period of uncertainty, and I felt that I could help people support their health by sharing a product that had been traditionally used for the mouth, teeth, gums, and overall well-being. Some people also used it topically on their hands and skin.
So I started promoting and selling chilcuague in the United States. Eventually, I realized that this liquid gold was meant for bigger things.
I asked my friends if they could produce more, and they said, “As much as you want.”
That was when I asked my beloved, Andrea, to help me create a company to market our products. She would become the head and face of the company, and I would support her and follow her toward great success.
My brother in Mexico helped with logistics and gave us advice about how to create and build a company. And off we went.
The Vision Behind Flower N Song
My beloved Andrea now runs the company and holds the vision for where we are going. She continues to focus on providing the best products while staying true to our purpose: being of service to people who want to maintain a healthy lifestyle using traditional, natural products.
These are products that have been used by our ancestors for thousands of years here on this continent.
It feels really good to be part of this company. I’m just one component of something much greater—a team that includes the farmers, producers, marketers, and every person who uses our products and wants to come along on this ride with us.
Together, we are working toward taking greater control of our well-being and becoming more connected to the natural world around us.
I’ve always worked with plants. It runs in my family. My great-great-grandmother used plants to help heal people, and plants have always been part of how our family stayed healthy.
Preventive health is the way to go. As the saying goes, “Nip it in the bud.”
That is why we chose the name Flower N Song.
The flower represents the earth and all its beauty. It represents the plants, the soil, and the knowledge passed down from our ancestors. It represents the intelligence and cultivation that helped our ancestors build their beautiful civilizations throughout Mexico.
The song represents everything above us. Some call it Heaven, some call it the Universe, and some call it the Creator. To me, the song is the wind and the air that connect us to the consciousness of the Universe. It represents the beauty, energy, and knowledge that exist above us and surround us every day.
So, it is all covered in Flower N Song: the earth, the plants, the beauty, the sky, the Universe, and the knowledge that connects everything together
.
We are the antennas, with our feet firmly planted on the earth and our crown chakras reaching up toward the Universe. We are connected to everything around us and to everything above us.
And with all of that, we have health above all.
Thank you, Life.
In my next blog, I’ll write about the second part of why Flower N Song was started, with a focus on our pine pollen products.
