How Reconnecting With Nature Can Restore Strength, Energy, and the True Spirit of Manhood

A few days ago I wrote a post about reconnecting with nature so that we as men can connect with our vitality and the true essence of what it means to be a man on this planet. Our time here is actually very brief when you think about it. What is one hundred years, after all? Most people don’t even live that long. Because of that, I think it’s important to reflect on what it truly means to live well while we are here.
That’s what led me to think about male vitality and the deeper question of what it means to be a man.
Of course, not all men are the same. We each have different personalities, interests, and paths in life. Yet there are also certain fundamental truths that many men share. I don’t know a single man who wants low testosterone levels. I don’t know any man who desires poor health or weak vitality. Most men want strength, energy, and the ability to live life fully. We may differ in many ways, but some truths seem universal.
Learning From the Woods
I lived in New York for several years, and during that time we held Native American ceremonies there. Most of these ceremonies were held outdoors or in teepees, and there was usually a fire burning throughout the ceremony. Some ceremonies lasted all night, which meant we needed a large amount of wood to keep the fire going.
Over time, more and more young men became interested in learning about our Indigenous ways. When they asked how they could help, we would invite them to come gather and chop wood for the ceremonies.
They were always excited to learn. But once we got out into the woods, I noticed something interesting. Many of them didn’t really know how to be in nature. When I handed them an axe, they were often clumsy with it. It quickly became clear that some of them had never handled an axe before.
After about twenty minutes of chopping wood, one young man began to develop blisters on the palms of his hands. When I looked closely at his hands, I noticed how soft they were. There wasn’t a single callus on either hand.
That moment really made me think.
The Lost Connection
Seeing those soft hands made me realize something about the modern lifestyle many young men are living today. They spend most of their time indoors. They sit in front of screens, eat processed foods that come out of cardboard boxes, and rarely engage in the kind of physical activity that connects them to the natural world.
When I was growing up, most of the guys I knew had calluses on their hands. It was simply part of life. We worked outside, built things, played sports, and used our bodies regularly.
My son, who is nineteen years old now, has quite a few calluses on his hands as well. He has always been an outdoor person. He enjoys sports, he works out, and he loves chopping wood. In fact, chopping wood is one of the best exercises you can do. It works the entire body and naturally boosts testosterone levels.
Unfortunately, the sedentary lifestyle that has become so common today has taken a toll on many young men.
The Importance of Sunlight and the Outdoors
When people spend most of their time indoors, they miss out on some of the most basic things the human body needs. Sunlight is one of those things. Our bodies rely on sunlight to produce vitamin D and maintain healthy biological rhythms.
Today, many people are told that the sun is dangerous. While excessive exposure can certainly cause harm, avoiding the sun altogether is not the answer. In my opinion, marketing from companies that sell chemical sunscreen products has sometimes distorted the conversation about sunlight.
The truth is that the human body benefits greatly from moderate sun exposure. Just a few minutes a day can make a difference. Spending more time outdoors—whether hiking, working, or simply being in nature—can have tremendous benefits for physical and mental health.
When we chop wood, we often do it in the shade. The point isn’t to stand in the sun all day. The point is to reconnect with the outdoors and the incredible beauty of the natural world.
The Meaning of Callused Hands
That’s why I believe callused hands can be an important symbol for young men.
Calluses aren’t just rough skin. They are a sign of action. They represent building, creating, and working with your hands. They show that a person is engaging with the physical world rather than sitting passively on the sidelines.
Callused hands represent movement, strength, and what you might call kinetic energy. They often reflect a healthy body and a lifestyle that includes time outdoors and physical effort.
After all, what young man truly wants to have soft hands?
Preventive Wisdom From Nature
Another thing I have noticed is the difference between Western medicine and traditional Native medicine. Western medicine tends to focus on treating illness after it appears. In contrast, Native medicine is often focused on prevention.
Much of traditional medicine comes directly from nature. The goal is not only to avoid sickness but to strengthen the body so that it remains healthy and vibrant in the first place.
Instead of waiting until the body breaks down, why not nourish and support it beforehand? Natural foods, time outdoors, physical activity, and traditional plant medicines have been used for generations to maintain strong health.
Reawakening Vitality
What I witnessed in the woods with those young men was something powerful. Once they spent time outside, worked with their hands, and reconnected with nature, something began to change in them.
Their bodies grew stronger. Their energy improved. But perhaps more importantly, something deeper inside them seemed to wake up.
Sometimes all it takes is a little exposure to the natural world to remind us of who we really are.
And for many men today, that reconnection with nature may be one of the most powerful ways to rediscover true vitality.
A Reawakening in Nature
The young men I worked with in New York eventually did become outdoor men. Over time, I saw how even a little exposure to nature began to awaken something within them.
Once they started spending more time outdoors and experiencing a more natural lifestyle, their health began to improve. They became stronger, more confident, and more comfortable working with their hands in the natural world.
Some of them also began taking a few natural supplements like our Male Hormone Tonic and many noticed a significant shift in their energy levels. They started to feel more vitality than they had before.
What I witnessed was a kind of reawakening. With the right environment, a little guidance, and time spent in nature, many of these young men began reconnecting with a deeper sense of strength and vitality that had always been within them.
Sometimes that is all it takes—a step outside, a tool in your hands, the smell of wood and earth, and the rhythm of physical work. In those moments, something ancient begins to stir again.
Nature has a way of reminding us who we are.
For many men today, reconnecting with the natural world may be one of the most powerful ways to rediscover strength, health, and true vitality. The modern world may have pulled many of us indoors, but the path back has always been there—waiting just beyond the trees.
With Love and Respect,
Rudy
