Nahui Ollin: The Meaning of Kinetic Energy

We as human beings have always been nomadic by nature, yet every now and then we plant roots and establish ourselves in one part of the planet for many years. Our ancestors in the Americas understood this deeply. Whenever it came time to plant roots, they built great civilizations across different parts of the earth, all the while never forgetting their nomadic spirit. They always remembered that, in their heart of hearts, they were travelers moving through life in rhythm with the universe.

They called this state of being “Nahui Ollin” — the Four Movements. We all carry this idea of Nahui Ollin inside of us, but in modern times many people have forgotten it and resigned themselves to being sedentary. This is one of the reasons so many young people today are less active than the generations that came before them. They spend too much time indoors. They work indoors, watch television indoors, or spend countless hours doom scrolling indoors, dimming the lights around them so their screens can shine brighter than the world itself.

And this, in itself, is already a problem. But something even deeper is happening that many people do not realize. There is now a disconnection from the body, and in turn a disconnection from the spirit, because no one taught people about kinetic energy and the sacred importance of movement.

The good thing is that many people are beginning to realize something feels off inside of them, even if they cannot fully explain it. They know they want change, but they do not know where to begin or how to reconnect with themselves.

More and more people are waking up to the realization that much of the food sold to them comes from unconscious companies more interested in profit than human well-being. Too many people eat out of cardboard boxes and move too little. What this world needs is fewer indoor humans and more outdoor people. It is time to reconnect with the sun again.

Returning to nature and reconnecting with our own kinetic energy is actually much simpler than people think. It begins with a shift in perspective. Maybe it means waking up earlier, drinking a large glass of water, and setting an intention for the day. By setting an intention, we begin making small changes that slowly transform our lives.

Starting with water is important because if we truly pay attention to it, we realize water was never meant to stay stagnant. When water sits still for too long, it becomes polluted. Human beings are made up mostly of water, and that is why Native cultures have always paid close attention to how water moves. We mimic it because we understand it is one of our greatest teachers. Water teaches us to keep flowing.

This is what the philosophy of Nahui Ollin is all about.

Yes, we can stop and smell the flowers. We come from a culture of Flower and Song. But even in stillness, we remain in motion. Even when we are resting, life itself is flowing through us. This is one of the great understandings our ancestors gave to the world.

They taught us to listen to the waters of life and become more like them. They said: be clear like water. Do not become stagnant. Water can be fluid, so learn to be fluid. Water can become solid, so learn to stand strong. Water can rise invisibly into the sky, so elevate your mind and rise higher in consciousness. Become more aware with each passing day.

This is not just philosophy — it is a practice. A way of becoming more in tune with your body, your spirit, and the true nature of being human.

Travel: best way to keep moving

Somewhere along the way, modern society became distracted from this truth. That is why so many people today struggle physically, mentally, and spiritually. Yet despite all the complexity of the modern world, many problems could begin healing if people simply moved more, breathed deeper, and reconnected with the four elements of life — not just water, but earth, air, and fire as well. Human beings would be healthier, happier, and far more balanced.

Sometimes when I think about today’s world, I feel a certain melancholy because many of the problems people struggle with today were solved long ago by our ancestors. Yet much of this wisdom has been forgotten, buried beneath distraction and misinformation. If more people understood the worldview of our ancestors, they could use that knowledge to improve their own lives. But modern people are overwhelmed. They no longer know what to believe.

Some of my friends believe this wisdom was intentionally hidden, but that is not what this discussion is about. What I do know is that there are still many teachings waiting to be rediscovered. Much of ancestral wisdom survived through oral tradition. You can burn books, but it is much harder to erase wisdom carried in the hearts and voices of the people. One of the greatest teachings that survived is the philosophy of Nahui Ollin.

Nahui Ollin is kinetic energy connected to the movement of the four directions. Native peoples have always maintained a sacred relationship with the four directions because each one carries a distinct energy that helps human beings understand where they stand — not only on this planet, but within the greater universe itself. This is why our ancestors became master astronomers and creators of some of the most precise calendars humanity has ever known.

They understood that each direction carried a force capable of helping human beings grow, heal, and evolve — if they learned how to connect with it.

The first direction is the East. The East carries the energy of Consciousness. As the first rays of sunlight touch the new day, they remind us to elevate our thoughts and awaken our awareness. Every sunrise is a movement of light returning to the world, reminding us to rise mentally and spiritually alongside it. The East teaches us to keep our thoughts elevated and our minds focused on higher things.

The second direction is the South, which represents Willpower. This is the energy that helps us overcome obstacles and continue forward despite hardship. It is also connected to children. From the moment a child learns to walk, they fall over and over again, yet they never think about quitting. They simply rise again. Children grow stronger every year, symbolizing the human ability to ascend through every challenge life places before us. The South reminds us that resilience is part of our nature.

The third direction is the West. The West is where we regenerate ourselves. Like the serpent shedding its skin, we release what no longer serves us so we can become something new. Every day offers another opportunity to improve ourselves and movement is one of the greatest tools for transformation. Our bodies themselves teach us this truth. We shed skin, replenish blood cells, grow new hair, and evolve constantly. Life is always moving, always renewing itself. The West teaches us that human beings are meant to evolve continuously if they remain in the flow of life.

The fourth movement is the North. The North is connected to Ancestral Memory. It is the direction of those who came before us. It reminds us that there is already a vast reservoir of wisdom available to guide us through life. As I said earlier, many of today’s struggles were already understood by our ancestors, especially when it came to disciplining the mind and remaining in creative flow rather than falling into cycles of negativity and despair.

As the saying goes: discipline the mind and the body will follow.

The teachings of our ancestors help cultivate both discipline and creativity. They teach us how to live in greater harmony with ourselves, with nature, and with each other. That is why we were always encouraged to stay connected to their wisdom.

So thank you to the ancestors for teaching us about Nahui Ollin — the sacred flow of life.

And as one of my favorite songs from Willie Nelson says:

“Still is still moving to me.”

Thank you too Willie.

Love and respect….
